Today marks the end of Mode à Paris, aka the Haute Couture fashion shows in the City of Light. While most of the world rallies to celebrate the Ready-to-Wear shows, it's haute couture that typically sets the tone for what's to come, including what we might be seeing on Academy Award nominees. (Hi, Michelle and Rooney.) If Jean Paul Gaultier has any say in the matter, though, he foresees a future full of Amy Winehouses. The funtastic Parisian designer made quite the couture statement this week (much to the chagrin of some of the fash critics) when he sent his entire fall 2012 haute couture collection down the runway on models made to look like the late singer. We're talking everything from her signature beehive and mole as well as her penchant for nicotine and leather. In a word, it was pretty SPECATACULAR and included four dudes doo-wopping her songs throughout the show.
While the critics may balk at the choice to do such a literal homage to the Back to Black singer, we must remind them that this is JEAN PAUL GAULTIER, a fashion goliath who wears Mohawk sunglasses and loves his modern music divas so much he has taken to spanking Lady Gaga and having Beth Ditto open and close his show. We're sure he had the same sort of admiration for Miss Winehouse, and chose to not only be inspired by her but pay tribute to her astonishing creative time here on earth (including her collaboration with Fred Perry). What's the big deal? We think the collection is a rockabilly paradise complete with saucy crimson corsets, perfect leather jackets over sparkle-striped sweaters and mixed pattern pencil skirts, as well as a mega-structured wedding dress with a teardrop shaped bodice and alien gill peplum shape that seems almost sad with the veil over that oh-so familiar beehive. It's all rather beautiful, fun, and different...and isn't that what Amy was all about?
